Author’s Preface<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The title of this book was born from a specific moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the Mid-Autumn Festival of 2025. I was sitting quietly in a hilltop caf\u00e9 in Da Lat, Vietnam, immersed in the transition of sunset and moonrise. The setting of the sun and the rising of the moon are the most ordinary of natural phenomena, yet at different times and in different settings, they never fail to evoke different feelings. Readers of Us in a World Out of Order<\/em> will know that on that day of that year, I was a wanderer with neither a place to return to nor a goal in sight. At the very instant the golden rays of the setting sun veiled the horizon, a full moon had already hung in the sky, shedding its clear, cool light. Through this eternal entrustment and borrowing of light, the two celestial bodies illuminated the Earth for all living things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deeply moved, a couplet came to my mind, and I blurted out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fading glow yields to the moon, allowing its full gaze,<\/em> As the sun journeys to other mountains, warming other lives.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I asked the waiter for pen and paper, scribbled these two lines down, and pinned them to the message board on the wall. After the horizon completely sealed away the golden sunlight, I hailed a motorbike through a ride-sharing app. The driver revved the engine and carried me through the undulating hills and valleys under the moonlight. Amidst the vibrations and the roar of the engine, another two lines came to me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Floating dust and soft light drift together in leisure,<\/em> Reincarnated across the four seas, they turn into river lanterns.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Together, they formed a complete qi-yan-jue-ju<\/em> (a classic seven-character quatrain) titled Borrowed Light<\/em>. Because I recorded that poem along with the experience surrounding it in Us in a World Out of Order<\/em>, it is not listed separately in this book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That night, I shared Borrowed Light<\/em> on my WeChat Moments. A friend sent his warm regards and praised the poem, calling it a near-perfect seven-character quatrain. An AI validated the poem’s originality for him and interpreted its meaning: “Using the magnificent beauty of the natural world as a vessel, these lines harbor a mind that believes ‘success does not have to belong to me, yet no effort is ever made in vain.’ It carves out a spiritual realm of active engagement with the world to illuminate the universe, completing a philosophical closed-loop of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.”<\/em> At that time, I had not yet truly used AI, but this evaluation aligned so perfectly with my state of mind and the poetic atmosphere of the verse that it brought me immense comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sun hands its light over to the moon, and the moon absorbs the fading glow to its heart’s content. Is this not a state of letting go, an attitude free of attachment\u2014”following nature and governing through non-action”? Although the sun has “journeyed to other mountains” and is no longer present here, its light still shines on, warming other mountains and other people. Nature has its laws, yet the affairs of the world are transient. The drifting manifestations of the world, like “floating dust” and “soft light,” are just like human attachments\u2014some wishes are fulfilled, while others must be let go. Souls and desires may drift like fallen leaves in the wind or float with the water; yet they can also be like the moon in the water or lanterns on the river, using their faint glimmer to light up a select few and commemorate the small self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using so many words to explain the title\u2014and the poetic meaning behind a poem not even included in this volume\u2014makes this single quatrain seem heavier than all the other poems and essays in the book. Yet, this context is truly vital to this work. Poetry and prose are the most profound disciplines in Chinese literature; countless masterpieces have been passed down since the Western Zhou, the Spring and Autumn period, the Qin, Han, Tang, and Song dynasties. My strength lies in non-fiction writing\u2014a genre that often does not require overly exquisite prose or a mind brimming with classical erudition, which happens to compensate for my lack of basic literary training. Frankly speaking, I know my literary skills still fall far short. Any educated person from the thousands of years of the Chinese-speaking world could probably easily find various flaws in my poetry and prose. Therefore, if the evaluation of Borrowed Light<\/em> by my friend and the AI holds true, it proves that this book possesses a certain value. After all, if a book can offer its readers even a single drop of essence to benefit from, that is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For over a decade, the bio on my self-media accounts carried a motto: “Focus on unleashing your strengths, and let your flaws continuously evaporate.”<\/em> This book collects more than a hundred of my poems and essays written over the seven years from 2018 to 2025. They were all born from the “non-fiction” writing style to which I have long been accustomed, carrying on and inheriting the genes of realism and truth-keeping. I recommend this book to my readers with this thought: when I write poetry and prose, I inevitably run the risk of falling into clich\u00e9s; but keeping it real and preserving the truth\u2014that is undoubtedly its strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the editing process of this book, I used AI for proofreading and correction. When editing the essay The Chinese New Year of Those Years<\/em>, the very first sentence the AI generated was: “This is a highly valuable piece of work.”<\/em> Instantly, my sense of gratification was pushed to the maximum. I asked it why it suddenly blurted this out. It replied that the records of rural society and life contained within the piece were things it had never read before. And those things, if no one recorded them, would vanish entirely from history, which would be a great tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every Chinese person who lived through those seven years from 2018 to 2025 had their own experiences and perceptions: the society underwent various “downward” shifts, marked by economic decline, a deteriorating market, a sweeping pandemic, and the silencing of lockdowns. However, the more people are silenced and the harder life becomes, the more magnificent the writers, scholars, and literary works of those eras tend to grow. The Qin and Han, the Tang and Song, the late Qing and the early Republic\u2014each witnessed the decline of dynasty after dynasty, yet each also saw bursts of cultural innovation rise from one generation to the next. I believe someone must always write; someone must always speak out. Words and voices, like the water of the vast sea, are a single drop, but they are also the tide. It is through writing and speaking out that truth and innovation are engraved into the bedrock of history\u2014usable and useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A speck of dust in the drifting air, a spark of light in the soft glow, a drop of water in the vast sea\u2014I now deliver this work into the hands of my readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5e8f<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u7684\u540d\u5b57\u6765\u81ea\u4e00\u4e2a\u573a\u666f\u3002\u90a3\u662f2025\u5e74\u4e2d\u79cb\uff0c\u5728\u8d8a\u5357\u5927\u53fb\u7684\u4e00\u5904\u5c71\u9876\u5496\u5561\u5c4b\uff0c\u6211\u9759\u5750\u4e8e\u65e5\u843d\u3001\u6708\u5347\u7684\u6c1b\u56f4\u91cc\u3002\u65e5\u843d\u3001\u6708\u5347\u672c\u662f\u6781\u5e73\u5e38\u7684\u81ea\u7136\u73b0\u8c61\uff0c\u5374\u603b\u80fd\u5728\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u65f6\u70b9\u4e0e\u73af\u5883\uff0c\u7ed9\u4eba\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u611f\u89c9\u3002\u300a\u5931\u5e8f\u4e16\u754c\u4e2d\u7684\u6211\u4eec\u300b\uff08\u539f\u540d\u300a\u6211\u76842025\uff0c\u6d3b\u5728\u4e00\u4e2a\u5931\u5e8f\u7684\u4e16\u754c\u300b\uff09\u7684\u8bfb\u8005\u4f1a\u77e5\u9053\uff0c\u90a3\u5e74\u90a3\u65e5\u7684\u6211\uff0c\u6b63\u6d6a\u8ff9\u5929\u6daf\u3002\u592a\u9633\u7684\u91d1\u5149\u906e\u853d\u5929\u8fb9\u7684\u4e00\u77ac\uff0c\u4e00\u8f6e\u6ee1\u6708\u5df2\u60ac\u5728\u7a7a\u4e2d\u3001\u53d1\u51fa\u6e05\u5149\uff0c\u4e8c\u8005\u501f\u7740\u5149\u7684\u6c38\u6052\u6258\u4ed8\u4e0e\u501f\u4e88\uff0c\u628a\u5730\u7403\u7167\u4eae\u7ed9\u4f17\u751f\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u5fc3\u5934\u611f\u6168\u987f\u751f\uff0c\u201c\u9980\u6656\u4e88\u6708\u4efb\u9971\u89c8\uff0c\u5f80\u53bb\u5b83\u5c71\u6696\u4f17\u751f\u201d\u8131\u53e3\u800c\u51fa\u3002\u6211\u5411\u670d\u52a1\u5458\u8981\u6765\u7eb8\u7b14\uff0c\u628a\u8fd9\u4e24\u53e5\u9898\u5728\u7eb8\u4e0a\uff0c\u8d34\u5230\u5899\u4e0a\u7684\u7559\u8a00\u677f\u3002\u5929\u8fb9\u5f7b\u5e95\u95ed\u5408\u91d1\u5149\u4e4b\u540e\uff0c\u6211\u5728\u7f51\u7ea6\u8f66\u5e73\u53f0\u53eb\u6765\u4e00\u8f86\u6469\u6258\u8f66\uff0c\u8f66\u624b\u8f70\u9e23\u7740\u6cb9\u95e8\uff0c\u8f7d\u6211\u5728\u6708\u5149\u4e0b\u9a76\u8fc7\u9ad8\u4f4e\u8d77\u4f0f\u7684\u5c71\u91ce\uff1b\u6211\u7adf\u5728\u9707\u52a8\u4e0e\u8f70\u9e23\u91cc\u53c8\u541f\u51fa\u201c\u6d6e\u5c18\u548c\u5149\u540c\u6563\u6f2b\uff0c\u8f6e\u56de\u56db\u6d77\u5316\u6cb3\u706f\u201d\uff0c\u51d1\u6210\u4e86\u5b8c\u6574\u7684\u4e03\u8a00\u7edd\u53e5\u300a\u9980\u6656\u4e88\u6708\u300b\u3002\u90a3\u9996\u8bd7\u8fde\u540c\u5f53\u65f6\u7684\u7ecf\u5386\uff0c\u5df2\u5199\u5728\u300a\u5931\u5e8f\u4e16\u754c\u4e2d\u7684\u6211\u4eec\u300b\u91cc\uff0c\u4fbf\u4e0d\u518d\u5355\u5217\u4e8e\u672c\u4e66\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u592a\u9633\u628a\u5149\u4ea4\u7ed9\u6708\u4eae\u53bb\u627f\u63a5\uff0c\u6708\u4eae\u5219\u5c3d\u60c5\u5438\u6536\u4f59\u6656\uff0c\u8fd9\u4f55\u5c1d\u4e0d\u662f\u4e00\u79cd\u653e\u4efb\u3001\u65e0\u6240\u6267\u7684\u6001\u5ea6\u2014\u2014\u201c\u987a\u5e94\u81ea\u7136\u3001\u65e0\u4e3a\u800c\u6cbb\u201d\u3002\u867d\u201c\u5f80\u53bb\u5b83\u5c71\u201d\u3001\u8eab\u5f62\u5df2\u4e0d\u5728\u6b64\u5730\uff0c\u5149\u5374\u4ecd\u5728\u7167\u7740\u3001\u6696\u7740\u66f4\u591a\u7684\u5b83\u5c71\u4e0e\u4ed6\u4eba\u3002\u81ea\u7136\u6709\u89c4\u5f8b\uff0c\u4e16\u95f4\u4e8b\u5374\u53c8\u65e0\u5e38\uff1b\u201c\u6d6e\u5c18\u201d\u201c\u548c\u5149\u201d\u90a3\u4e9b\u6563\u6f2b\u7684\u4e16\u95f4\u4e07\u8c61\uff0c\u6b63\u5982\u4eba\u7684\u6267\u8457\uff0c\u6216\u5919\u613f\u4ee5\u507f\uff0c\u6216\u4e0d\u5f97\u4e0d\u653e\u4e0b\u3002\u7075\u9b42\u4e0e\u613f\u671b\uff0c\u4f1a\u50cf\u843d\u53f6\u968f\u98ce\u98d8\u96f6\u3001\u968f\u6c34\u6f02\u6d41\uff0c\u4e5f\u53ef\u4ee5\u50cf\u6c34\u4e2d\u6708\u3001\u6cb3\u4e0a\u706f\uff0c\u7528\u5fae\u5149\u7167\u4eae\u5c0f\u4f17\u3001\u796d\u5960\u5c0f\u6211\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5149\u662f\u4e3b\u65e8\uff0c\u9980\u662f\u4e3b\u7b14\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u53eb\u4f5c\u201c\u9980\u5149\u4e88\u6708\u201d\uff0c\u800c\u975e\u90a3\u9996\u8bd7\u7684\u201c\u9980\u6656\u4e88\u6708\u201d\u3002\u81f3\u4e8e\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u7528\u201c\u9980\u201d\u800c\u4e0d\u7528\u201c\u4f59\u201d\u2014\u2014\u662f\u6211\u5728\u54ac\u6587\u56bc\u5b57\u3001\u72ec\u81ea\u907f\u5acc\uff1a\u90a3\u4e2a\u201c\u4f59\u201d\u6709\u201c\u6211\u201d\u4e4b\u610f\uff0c\u201c\u9980\u201d\u624d\u662f\u7eaf\u7cb9\u7684\u591a\u51fa\u3001\u5269\u4f59\u4e4b\u610f\u3002\u6211\u53c8\u80fd\u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u5149\uff1f\u4e0d\u8fc7\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u8981\u81ea\u7531\u3001\u8981\u5403\u996d\u7684\u666e\u901a\u751f\u547d\u7f62\u4e86\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u66fe\u6709\u5341\u6570\u5e74\uff0c\u6211\u81ea\u5a92\u4f53\u7684\u7b80\u4ecb\u91cc\u6709\u4e00\u53e5\u5ea7\u53f3\u94ed\u2014\u2014\u201c\u4f18\u70b9\u96c6\u4e2d\u53d1\u6325\uff0c\u7f3a\u70b9\u6301\u7eed\u6325\u53d1\u201d\u3002\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u6536\u5f55\u4e86\u62112018\u81f32025\u3001\u4e03\u5e74\u95f4\u7684\u4e00\u767e\u591a\u7bc7\u8bd7\u8bcd\u4e0e\u6563\u6587\uff0c\u5b83\u4eec\u90fd\u751f\u6210\u4e8e\u6211\u65e9\u5df2\u4e60\u60ef\u7684\u201c\u975e\u865a\u6784\u201d\uff0c\u5ef6\u7eed\u3001\u4f20\u627f\u7740\u5199\u5b9e\u3001\u5b58\u771f\u7684\u57fa\u56e0\u3002\u6211\u5411\u8bfb\u8005\u63a8\u8350\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\uff1a\u6211\u5199\u8bd7\u8bcd\u6563\u6587\uff0c\u96be\u514d\u6709\u4fd7\u5957\u4e4b\u5acc\uff1b\u5199\u5b9e\u3001\u5b58\u771f\uff0c\u5374\u4e00\u5b9a\u662f\u5b83\u7684\u4f18\u70b9\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u7684\u7f16\u8f91\uff0c\u6211\u7528AI\u67e5\u9519\u3001\u6821\u6b63\u3002\u7f16\u5230\u300a\u90a3\u4e9b\u5e74\u7684\u5e74\u300b\u65f6\uff0cAI\u5934\u4e00\u53e5\u8df3\u51fa\u6765\u7684\u662f\u201c\u8fd9\u662f\u4e00\u7bc7\u5f88\u503c\u94b1\u7684\u4f5c\u54c1\u201d\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u5feb\u611f\u88ab\u5b83\u77ac\u95f4\u62c9\u6ee1\u3002\u6211\u95ee\u5b83\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u7a81\u7136\u8e66\u51fa\u8fd9\u53e5\uff0c\u5b83\u8bf4\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u5185\u5bb9\u91cc\u90a3\u4e9b\u4e61\u571f\u793e\u4f1a\u4e0e\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u8bb0\u8f7d\uff0c\u662f\u5b83\u4e0d\u66fe\u8bfb\u5230\u8fc7\u7684\u3002\u800c\u90a3\u4e9b\uff0c\u82e5\u6ca1\u6709\u4eba\u8bb0\u4e0b\u6765\uff0c\u5c31\u4f1a\u5728\u5386\u53f2\u4e2d\u5f7b\u5e95\u6d88\u901d\uff0c\u5b9e\u5728\u53ef\u60dc\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n
