The autumn book fair organized by L’Autre Livre, the French independent publishers’ association, will be held on 7–8 November 2026 at the Palais de la Femme in Paris. Innovation Era Press (IEP) will host a stand at this year’s fair, where the book’s author, Desolate Isle, will appear in person to sign copies for readers.

Us in a World Out of Order (French edition: Nous dans un monde en désordre, subtitled “China, America and the Reshaping of the World”) is a first-person work of nonfiction recounting the author’s own experiences over the past year, 2025, as he moved through more than a dozen countries and territories — the United States, China, Dubai, Barcelona, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong (China), the Philippines, Canada and Japan. The author had run his own company for many years; when it was forced to close amid China’s prolonged economic downturn, he fell from the upper-middle tier of society to become one of “those at the bottom.” It was precisely this fall that allowed him, as a single “thread,” to string together the people he met along the way — those crammed into tiny rented rooms, those held in immigration prisons, those scraping a living at the bottom, those fleeing disaster, those who grew suddenly rich or were ruined in the swings of global capital — and to tell these ordinary destinies, swept along by the tides of the age, as one would tell a story.

This is not the commentary of an onlooker, but the true testimony of someone who lived it, written in the midst of his own wandering. The book holds the author’s firsthand record of being detained in an immigration prison at the US–Mexico border, of undergoing vetting and appearing before an immigration court; it also offers, through his double lens as entrepreneur and traffic-engineering expert, a clear-eyed observation of the economic confrontation between China and the United States, the tariff and technology contests, Southeast Asia’s “grey industries,” and the plight of China’s private economy. For French and English readers alike, it is a rare window: through one Chinese man’s path of “innocent exile,” to understand how America’s “war on immigrants” comes down upon ordinary people, how the contest between the world’s two largest economies is reshaping the world, and what China’s society, economy and markets truly look like today. With a restrained yet warm hand, the author brings vast global upheavals down onto one individual life after another — a read that is at once the rise and fall of a personal fate and a cross-section of this disordered age.

Both the French and English editions are already publicly available on numerous platforms. A limited number of printed French and English copies will be on hand at the fair, available first-come, first-served. To avoid disappointment, IEP suggests that readers wishing to own a signed copy purchase a physical book online in advance and bring it to the fair on the day, to be signed by the author free of charge. The author will also be at the stand to meet readers face to face and share the experiences and reflections behind the writing.
